Series Introduction: 10 Lessons From My Healing Journey

Before I ever found balance, I hit a personal health rock bottom: physically, emotionally, and metabolically. What finally moved me forward wasn’t another protocol, routine, or diet. It was using a bioenergetics model, understanding why my body was breaking down, what it needed to feel safe again, and how true healing happens from the inside out.

This series, 10 Lessons From My Healing Journey, shares the deepest insights I learned while rebuilding my health, metabolism, and relationship with my body. Each post goes far beyond “tips” and instead explores the foundational shifts that helped me move from depletion to resilience, and from self-control to true body partnership.

Here are the 10 lessons in the series. Each one represents a turning point in how I understood healing, wellness, and the generative nature of the human body:

  1. How Bioenergetics Transformed My Understanding of Health
  2. Form, Function, Health: Why Chasing the Body You Want Keeps You From the Health You Need
  3. Why You Won’t “Get Your Old Body Back”, and Why That’s a Good Thing
  4. The Power of Intention: How the Energy Behind a Choice Shapes Your Results
  5. Body Partnership: Understanding That Your Body Has Always Been on Your Side
  6. Safety Drives Physiology: How Thoughts Shape Metabolism, Stress, and Regulation
  7. Healing Has Layers: The Limits, Ceilings, and Expansions of Real Physiological Change
  8. Discipline vs. Self-Bullying: How Misused Effort Can Stall Your Healing

Introduction: When My Definition of Health Broke Down

For most of my life, I believed health was something you achieved by taking things away: fewer calories, less sugar, stricter rules, more discipline, longer fasts, tougher workouts. I thought the path to wellness was paved with eliminating everything that felt “wrong” or “bad.”

But my body eventually hit a wall. No matter how clean or disciplined or “perfect” I tried to be, my health collapsed: my hormones crashed, my digestion was unreliable, my hair was falling out, and my mental health was hanging by a thread.

That “rock bottom” forced me to ask a hard question: If doing everything “right” made me worse… what really is health?

The answer started emerging when I discovered the fundamentals of bioenergetics: the science of how energy begets life, structure, function, and ultimately, health.
My understanding of bioenergetics was informed by  Ray Peat’s writing, Hans Selye’s work on stress physiology, Broda Barnes’s thyroid and metabolic research. These researchers, and finally learning foundational mitochondrial physiology, gave me a new definition:

Health does not come from the elimination of anything that could cause dysfunction. Health is the presence of abundant, flexible, generative energy.

This transformation in understanding was the beginning of my healing.

In this post, I’ll give you an introduction to the physiology, philosophy, and practical applications of how the bioenergetic model transformed my healing journey. I am not an expert on this model; I am simply sharing my perspective on the principles of bioenergetics and how they transformed my health from rock bottom to thriving.

The Bioenergetics Model

The Physiological Perspective

Bioenergetics teaches that energy creates structure. Cells with adequate ATP can repair, detoxify, regenerate, digest, and maintain hormonal balance. Cells in low-energy states can’t complete these crucial processes, no matter how clean your diet is or how disciplined your routine feels.

Ray Peat’s work emphasized that high metabolic energy:

  • stabilizes blood sugar and improves glucose metabolism
  • lowers inflammation
  • supports thyroid function
  • improves the production and conversion of reproductive hormones
  • creates a pro-healing internal environment

See Ray Peat’s book Generative Energy for a full discussion on this.

When energy availability rises, the body naturally reorganizes toward health, without needing to force, restrict, or punish. Health is a product of energy, not of discipline.

This was the opposite of everything I had been taught.

The Philosophical Reframe

For years, I treated my body like a machine that needed fewer inputs and more control. Bioenergetics taught me that health isn’t created by subtraction. It’s created by adding energy and building stress resilience.

The Practical Application

You don’t heal by eliminating everything. You heal by identifying what feeds your system.

  • Eating enough protein, carbs, and nutrients to fuel the metabolism
  • Optimizing meal frequency to lower stress hormones
  • Matching exercise with appropriate fueling and recovery
  • Supporting thyroid function instead of suppressing metabolism
  • Prioritizing warmth, safety, and recovery

Stress Physiology and Bioenergetics

The Physiological Perspective

Hans Selye’s research showed that stress is not primarily psychological; it is metabolic first. A body with high energy output can tolerate and recover from stress. A commonly cited model
A body in a low-energy state enters:

  • Chronic cortisol dominance
  • Slow digestion
  • Impaired immunity
  • Impaired reproductive hormones
  • Fatigue & anxiety loops

This explained why my “willpower” always ran out. You can’t force your way into health if your cells are exhausted.

The Philosophical Reframe

What I once labeled as anxiety, laziness, lack of motivation, or self-sabotage was actually a stressed system protecting me from further overload.

My body wasn’t working against me. It was doing everything it could to save me from the stress I was forcing onto it.

The Practical Application

Stress resilience is energy-dependent. Stress management is energy management.

Practical examples:

  • Eating before intense workouts
  • Consistent fueling to reduce low blood sugar swings
  • Warmth, rest, and predictable rhythms
  • Reducing stressors before adding more demands
  • Building tolerance slowly instead of forcing change

Thyroid Health and Bioenergetics

The Physiological Perspective

Broda Barnes’ research demonstrated that thyroid function is the cornerstone of metabolic resilience.
Low thyroid output means:

  • Cold hands/feet
  • Slow digestion
  • Slow detoxification
  • Low progesterone
  • High (unopposed) estrogen
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Low energy availability
  • Increased inflammation

Suddenly, all my symptoms made sense. My health was failing because my metabolism lacked fuel. The low energy availability state led to a low thyroid state, and that led to the cascade of health complications.

The Philosophical Reframe

Instead of seeing my body as broken, I saw it as underpowered. Instead of blaming myself, I began asking: What would help my system produce more energy?

The Practical Application

You can begin using Brooks Barnes–style metabolic signs to assess signs of energy sufficiency:

  • Morning temperature and pulse
  • Warmth after meals
  • Stable energy
  • Digestion improvements
  • Predictable hunger cues

From there, you can gently increase metabolic support:

  • Mineral-rich foods
  • Adequate carbohydrates
  • Pro-metabolic proteins
  • Balanced meals
  • Circadian alignment
  • Prioritizing sleep and warmth

Structure Follows Energy: Increasing Metabolism Changes Everything

The Physiological Perspective

When cellular ATP rises from proper energy availability and mitochondrial energy productoon, the body has the resources to:

  • Repair tissues
  • Increase muscle tissue
  • Regulate appetite
  • Restore hormones
  • Stabilize mood and improve emotional regulation
  • Bring resilience to the nervous system
  • Create a robust physical structure

High energy builds a different body from the inside out. This is why restriction never creates lasting health. It removes the raw materials needed for the structure.

The Philosophical Reframe

This became one of the biggest lessons of my healing journey. I needed to allow more energy to move through my system to allow my body to build the structure to generate the structure that would support the health that could hold the life I wanted to live.

The Practical Application

Begin creating the conditions for energy to rise:

  • Regular meals
  • Nutrient and mineral density
  • Predictable rhythms
  • Warmth
  • Supportive movement
  • Reducing chronic stress burdens

Healing Means Improving the System, Not Eliminating the Symptoms

The Physiological Perspective

Symptoms are not enemies or signs of failure on a health journey;  they’re signals of unmet energy needs. The more energy the system has, the fewer stress compensations the body must create.

The Philosophical Reframe

Bioenergetics taught me that Health is the presence of energetic abundance. From abundance, function emerges naturally.

The Practical Application

Sarah can shift from restriction to regeneration:

  • Instead of eliminating foods, add nourishing foods
  • Instead of overtraining, build a metabolic base
  • Instead of trying to “fix” symptoms, increase energy availability
  • Instead of punishing your body, partner with it

This is not about doing more; it’s about doing what allows your system to create more energy.

Conclusion: Bioenergetics Changes Everything

Bioenergetics changed my entire healing journey:

Your body isn’t fighting you. It’s fighting for you with the energy it has. When you increase its energy, everything changes.

This first post in the series sets the tone: healing isn’t about perfection or elimination.
It’s about supporting the energy that creates structure, function, and sustainable health. And from that place, your life and your body begin to transform.

For now, I’d love to hear from you: Have you tried to achieve health through restriction? What would happen if you increased energy availability to better resource your body for healing?

If you leave a comment below, I’ll personally reply with a note of encouragement. I would be honored to support you with a message of hope.

Wishing You Well,

Meghan
