The Profound Lessons Found in the Liminal Space of Healing

Introduction: When Healing is at a Standstill
This post is for the woman who feels stuck spinning her wheels on her health journey. What if the moments when you feel the most lost on your wellness journey are actually the moments when the deepest healing is happening? In holistic health, there’s a quiet, uncomfortable phase between the effort of doing and the place where transformation is realized. It’s called the liminal space.
It’s the part of your journey where old patterns fall away, but the new ones haven’t fully settled in. It is the experience of feeling stuck on a health journey. Liminal space is the space between where you were and where you are going. It feels uncertain, but it’s not a sign that you are not making progress. It’s the recalibration your body and nervous system need to truly transform.
Today, we are going to talk about liminal space on an emotional and nervous system level, and on a metabolic repair level, so you can understand why the work you are doing hasn’t surfaced in results yet, and why this integration phase is critical for your holistic health transformation.
The Liminal Space in Healing
Liminal space is the in-between of your healing process. It is the threshold between the old way of being and the new. It’s where the nervous system recalibrates to a baseline of safety, and your window of tolerance grows. It is where the metabolism begins to shift from survival and reaction into a place of rebuilding and restoration.
Think of it as your body’s integration zone. It’s the phase where you have planted the seeds and are watering them, but you haven’t seen a sprout yet. It is frosting because you don’t see the results of your efforts yet. You are allowing healing to catch up to all the effort you’ve been putting in.
Nervous System Recalibration in Liminal Space
When you’ve lived in a high-achieving, perfectionistic state for years, your nervous system becomes wired for doing. It sees stillness as unsafe, which is why slowing down feels so uncomfortable. But this stillness is exactly what allows the parasympathetic state to take over, guiding digestion, hormonal repair, and deep recovery.
The nervous system doesn’t heal instantaneously. It is way too smart to unlearn all of its adaptive responses after just a short time. That would not be a healthy response. It’s more like an old scale that holds an account of safety and unsafety. When the balance tips toward unsafety, dysregulation predominates. It takes experience after experience of “banking safety” by stacking experiences on the other side of the scale before your system is rewired. Slowing down, creating safety in the body, and allowing your system to slowly calibrate takes time.
The discomfort you feel in the liminal space of healing comes from you creating space for parasympathic (ventral vagal parasympathetic) healing, but the scales haven’t tipped yet. The liminal space in healing requires your nervous system to learn a new baseline of safety, and that simply takes time
The Metabolic Shift in Liminal Space
Your metabolic state of energy production is a direct reflection of the state of your nervous system. Your metabolism doesn’t just respond to what you eat. In chronic stress or restriction, your body shifts to a catabolic state to mobilize enough energy to get you through the stress response. In periods of chronic stress without sufficient resources, it leads to a physiological burnout. Your metabolism downregulates non-essential processes and conserves energy because it doesn’t feel safe to thrive.
When you enter the liminal space and begin to rest, nourish, and slow down, your mitochondria finally have the resources to shift from survival metabolism to restorative metabolism. This is metabolic healing. It doesn’t mean that you are never in a catabolic state and always in an anabolic state, just like you don’t stay in one state of the nervous system. It’s more about being able to shift with ease through the states, always having enough energy to resource yourself through any state.
Fatigue, appetite changes, and mood fluctuations can all be signs that your system is recalibrating. You don’t just jump straight into having an optimal metabolism. There can be fluctuations as your hormones recalibrate, and this can be a scary and confusing place. You shouldn’t be rapidly gaining weight or have concerning symptoms, but you might not be in your forever body just yet. This is the metabolic liminal space, and it is part of the process.
Why the Liminal Space Feels Emotionally Uncomfortable
The liminal space can feel emotionally raw because it dismantles the illusion of control. You’re letting go of the external validation that used to keep you safe, like diet rules, exercise performance, or routines that made you feel productive. This requires healing on the level of your very identity. It’s the point where your mind still clings to old ways of being, but your body is asking for something deeper.
Who are you, if you aren’t perfect? If you aren’t performing? How do you cope with surrendering control? Who are you without your productivity and performance? What would happen to your life if you slowed down? This is the emotional liminal space. As your nervous system heals and your metabolism shifts, you start to dislodge this emotional stuckness that has gone unaddressed as you rushed through these past years. All of a sudden, you are left to face these fears that have gone unheard. You have started to embody your new self, but it hasn’t yet been integrated.
Self-Trust: The Bridge Through the Liminal Space
In the liminal space, over-intellectualisation and white-knuckle willpower stop working, and intuition begins. Self-trust is what carries you through the liminal space. It’s built through small acts of consistency: feeding yourself before you’re starving, resting before you crash, speaking gently when your mind spirals. The mind-body connection grows consistently and predictably.
These self-trust-building moments communicate safety to your body. This is a practical experience of embodiment, reinforcing the bridge between your brain and your biology. Intuitive healing doesn’t mean throwing structure out the window. I actually think that the opposite is true. Your body craves rhythmic consistency, and inner wisdom is built as you align with that rhythm.
You don’t need perfect self-trust yet in this in-between place. You just need to keep showing up as it grows.
Integration: Letting the New Patterns Settle
Integration is what happens when your nervous system, metabolism, and mindset finally sync. You’re no longer forcing wellness. You’re living it. The information travels from your head to your heart. You embody what you once intellectualised.
The liminal space teaches your body to regulate and your heart to soften into the process. This is where health stops being a performance and becomes your natural rhythm. This is the point where deep, sustainable transformation takes root.
When I learned how to play the violin and cello, at first, I needed tape on the neck to show me where to put my fingers. I needed sheet music to spell out the notes, the rhythm, the tempo, and the key. I needed a metronome to keep time. It felt rigid because I needed the structure to guide me. It took years before I could really feel the music, make it my own, play by ear, and be present in the experience. I think health is like that. We learn new skills, build a structure around them, and practice them until we really embody them. This is integration, and it’s what happens under the surface during the liminal space.
Conclusion: Trusting the In-Between
The liminal space is where transformation hides: in the waiting, the resting, the softening. You have planted the seeds and you are tending to the garden, but the seeds haven’t sprouted. You have to continue on with the faith that you are taking action in the right direction.
If you feel stuck, you’re not behind. You’re in the in-between. Every system in your body is learning to feel safe enough to heal. Your nervous system is rebuilding trust in the new stability. Your metabolism is recalibrating. And your emotional baseline is learning a new way of being. The work is invisible and messy and imperfect and so hard to stay within. Trust your body, trust the process, trust the quiet. The real work is happening under the surface, and one day, that little seed will sprout, and all this work will unfold before your eyes.
